DEPARTMENT OF CATECHISM
Current System
All the affairs of the catechism department are synchronized systematically and precisely by a general body which comprise of the Vicar, Parish catechism animator, the head master, and the catechism staff. Each of them is entrusted with a specific duty for the smooth running of the classes.
Fr.Vicar
Rev.Fr.Vicar is the nominal head of the department of catechism. He verifies and studies various suggestions and the final decision is taken by him. He presides over all the meetings of the department.
Head Master
Head Master is the in charge of administration of the department. He maintains the registration details, attendance of teachers and students and shall also keep an overview over all the documents and files and keep them intact. The HM represents the catechetical commission and initiates all the directives issued.
He deals with the supply of adequate quantity of textbooks and is responsible towards the Parish council for submitting the proper accounts within the stipulated time.
It is a special responsibility of the HM to see to the spirituality of both teachers and the students. The HM makes it sure that they participate in the sacraments regularly and is the authorized person to take appropriate action against defaulter as well as to encourage all eligible to take active part sacraments regularly.
The HM supervises the attendance of both teachers and students and makes alternatives in the absence of teachers. She also takes special initiative to make it sure that students regulerly attend the classes.
Catechism Staff
Teachers are the key part of the catechism department. They are our own parishnors who voluntarily undertook the task of guiding and building up the students in catholic faith without any remuneration. We have thus 14 teachers.
They undertake the task of teaching the students. Along with the they see that the students keep the discipline in the church and also partakes in the sacraments regularly. They keep the regular attendances of the students. They always try to keep a regular personal contact with the students.
Catechism Students
The catechism students are from the Syro Malabar catholic family’s residing in the territory of Godbunher Road. They number in 148 who studies in various classes from 1st to 12th at school. According to the age and class of the students they are divided into six sections namely pre-communion, communion, post-communion, pre-confirmation, confirmation, Youth.
All catechism students are asked to participate in the Sunday mass and other sacraments regularly. The have to appear for catechism exams twice a year i.e. half yearly and annual. Those who score more than 36% are considered passed those students who secure more than 85% are eligible for the scholarship.
CATECHISM - GENERAL INFORMATION
TIME:- The time of the catechism is form 10.am to 11.30 am i.e. soon after the morning mass. All the catechism students participate in this mass. They are also involved in various activities like Bible reading, choir, and alter boy service etc. The general assembly for catechism students and the classes follow the Holy Mass.
FUNCTIONING OF THE DEPARTMENT:- Catechism is considered as the primary and integral part of the parish. The parish council takes every decision with regard to the parish activities. Therefore the HM are given representation in the parish council in order to propose the various matters requiring approval of the Parish Council. Once the approval is sanctioned it is implemented under the initiative of the HM.
ERRANDS OF THE PARISH COUNCIL:- The parish council is authorized committee to scrutinize and monitor all the catechetical activities and also ought to supply adequate fund for the same as per the suggestions of the HM.
Regular Activities In Catechism
- General Assembly
General Assembly is held on every working day. It is conducted soon after the Holy Mass. The students sing the catecatical anthem followed by the Bible reading. Later, the HM address the assembly making the students known about the various decisions, suggestions and the corrections that are to be made. Soon after the assembly each batch is sent to their respective classrooms in orderly manner.
- St.Thomas Children’s Academy
St.Thomas Children’s Academy is an amble opportunity given to the students to bring out their various cultural talents dormant in them. Students prepare various types of cultural programmers either batch wise or group wise and present it under the guidance of the Catechism teachers.
